Though podcasts have been around for a while now, I got in on the craze only a couple of years ago! I love listening to the intellectual, hilarious, and impactful minds of this world. There are so many podcasts to choose from these days, and there’s most likely something in the podcast-sphere that meets your tastes. Of course Serial is everyone’s fave, but I’ve found some others that are worth listening to. Below, I talk about my Top Five podcasts and why you should be listening to them too!
1. The Read
In 2013, two of my internet faves teamed up and created the perfect podcast. The Read is hosted by Kid Fury, a YouTube comedy genius, and Crissle, a ballsy and unapologetic writer from Oklahoma. Almost a year and a half later, The Read has become a sensation within the podcast community. And once you listen, you’ll understand why. With their hilarious and sometimes crude commentary on Black Culture to the highlights of Black Excellence, this podcast gives you a well-rounded listening experience. At the end of every episode, Kid Fury and Crissle read someone or something that’s been annoying them or causing a ruckus that must be put to an end. Reading, a term originated in the Black LGBTQ community, can be defined as the equivalent to a verbal beatdown. Every episode of The Read is funny, enlightening, and just an overall good time. 2. Another Round
In the past few years, Buzzfeed has made a huge impact on the internet. So much that it’s hard to go a day without seeing its name on your web browser. In addition to taking over your internet free time, Buzzfeed is now in your Podcast Feeds. Two Buzzfeed staff members, Tracy Clayton and Heben Nigatu are the hosts of Buzzfeed’s Another Round. In only a few months time, these women are already making a name for themselves and their amazing podcast. Most episodes have a guest, and the two ask the hard questions like “What do you think of squirrels?” With segments like Drunken Debates and Tracy’s Joke Time, I often find myself crying of laughter by the end of each episode. You’ll also hear about what’s going on in this week in the world, hear from influential people such as Issa Rae and Roxane Gay, and so much more. With only 17 episodes so far, you can take your weekend to catch up easily. Listen to an episode below and catch up quick! Follow Tracy @, Heben @, and @ on Twitter!
3. Stuff Mom Never Told You
Feel like you’re missing a weekly dose of feminist education? Look no further. Stuff Mom Never Told You is the most interesting and best portable learning experience I’ve ever had. Hosted by Cristen Conger and Caroline Ervin, every week is a history of feminist topics and they focus on telling facts and debunking the myths. From the Female Dominatrix, to the Laverne Cox Effect, to even a podcast dedicated to Judy Blume, there’s a podcast here for you. Started in 2009, there’s an archive full of topical episodes that are still relevant and a must listen. I love that this podcast gives variety and solidarity for all women. Stuff Mom Never Told you is also a blog and YouTube channel and it’s worth checking out! Check out a podcast episode below!
4. Call Your Girlfriend
This podcast is for “long-distance besties everywhere.” There’s something addicting and somewhat soothing about the voices of Ann Friedman and Aminatou Sow. The long distance besties have an obsession with Robyn, periods, and tackling the week’s hot topics. Every episode is like listening in to your older sister and her bestie’s phone conversation. Every time you hang up, you feel a little smarter and a bit more mature. And if that doesn’t convince you to listen, every episode you get to hear Call Your Girlfriend by Robyn, the podcast’s theme song. Ann is a contributing writer for publications such as New York Magazine and Elle, and Aminatou is a Tech Lady Mafia leader. Together, they work together seamlessly and you can tell why they’re close friends. Grab you and your best friend and subscribe to this podcast now! @ @ @
5. Let Me Femsplain
A story-telling podcast where women talk, and you listen. This is the tagline of Let Me Femsplain: a brand new podcast, from the creators of the online publication, Femsplain. Fempslain’s mission is to “change the dialogue of what it’s like to be a woman –– and in doing so, make our world a better place.” Every month, Femsplain has a monthly theme where women of the internet contribute their voices. With its publication already making its waves throughout the internet, I can only expect great things from this podcast. Its another outlet for women to share their stories, and I am so here for this. The first episode, Sexual Healing, presents four stories from different women narrated by themselves. I love the concept of this podcast and I think you will too. Listen to the first episode and catch up quick! Follow @ on Twitter!
